128-bit Encryption FAQ

IMPORTANT – Before beginning the download process make sure you EXIT all other programs.
For example, it is extremely important to close any ANTIVIRUS programs (i.e. Norton Utilities, MacAfee, Doctor Watson) before downloading Netscape. Disabling the virus program (an option selected from within these software packages) is NOT sufficient as this may cause the download file to be corrupted.

1. What is Encryption?
Encryption is the process of converting information into a more secure format for transmission. This means that plain text is converted to a scrambled code while transmitted, and then decrypted back to plain text at the receiving end of the transmission.

2. How do I determine if my Internet Explorer browser has 128-bit encryption?
Internet Explorer 4.x lists the security in its Help menu, under "About Internet Explorer". In the section marked 'Cipher strength' it will say 128-bit if you have a 128-bit browser.

3. How do I determine if I have 128-bit encryption for Internet Explorer 3.0 or below?
TNS Smart Inc. group does not support Internet Explorer 3.0 or below. In order to use WebMon, we recommend upgrading your browser to version 4.x or higher from Microsoft's website.

4. How do I determine if my Netscape Navigator/Communicator browser has 128-bit encryption?
Netscape for Windows lists its security level in its Help menu, under "About Netscape". In the Mac version, it is listed under the Apple icon. In the section market RSA Encryption, a sentence in bold describes either U.S. or International security. The US refers to 128-bit and International to 40-bit encryption.

5. What other help can I get?
If you have read through this site and are still having problems, and would like assistance with downloading 128-bit encryption, please call our Help Desk.

6. How long will it take to download?
IE requires a small file to be downloaded and as a rule of thumb takes just a few minutes. Netscape requires the whole browser to be downloaded unless you are a SmartUpdate client. You can find out the average time it takes to download each product by looking it up in the download specs for the product on the Overview of Products page. As a rough guide for Netscape:
  • T1/T3: several minutes
  • Cable Modem about 15-30 minutes
  • 33.6K or 56K Modems: 1.5 to 3 hours depending on server occupancy.
  • 28.8 or lower: 3 to 5 hours
  • Use a quality anti-virus program as often as possible, and update it regularly.

7. What is Netscape SmartUpdate?
SmartUpdate is a service provided by Netscape that allows you to ensure that you have the newest version of Netscape on your PC.
Special note for Communicator users: If you are using Netscape Communicator you must ensure that you download a new version of Netscape Communicator and not Netscape Navigator. Otherwise you will lose your e-mail, bookmarks, and newsgroups. Netscape Navigator is a stand-alone product. No e-mail and newsgroup viewers are included.

8. What if I lose my connection during the download process of Netscape?
Sometimes when downloading the Netscape Communicator/Navigator software you may come across certain issues with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Some Providers have an Inactivity Timer set up on their end. What basically happens is that if there is no activity for a certain amount of time you will get disconnected from your Internet Service Provider and hence your download will be aborted. At this time there is nothing TD can do about this situation. We suggest you contact your Internet Service Providers for help on the Inactivity Timer issue. In addition, if you are cut off because of an Inactivity Timer issue, you will have to start the download process again from the beginning.

9. When installing Netscape I get an error message: "This file is not the correct size or may be corrupt and is unusable"?
If you install the Netscape file after downloading and see a message saying: "This file is not the correct size or may corrupt and is unusable", it implies you never received the full download of Netscape Communicator/Navigator and will have to re-download the software again.

10. Netscape and Norton Antivirus?
If you use Norton Antivirus on your computer, you must shut it down BEFORE attempting to download Netscape Navigator/Communicator. Disabling the Antivirus program will still cause errors. You must close the software – disabling is not sufficient.

11. What else is TNS Smart Network Inc. doing to protect my privacy on the web?
TNS Smart Network Inc. has firewalls and other internal encryption techniques. A firewall is essentially an electronic boundary that prevents unauthorized access to certain files. We also regularly monitor internal systems for security breaches and are always keeping up with the latest security and encryption technology. In addition you will be logged out of WebMon if there has not been any activity for 120 minutes.

12. What is the difference between 128 and 40-bit encryption?
128-bit encryption provides a significantly greater amount of cryptographic protection over 40-bit encryption. 128-bit and 40-bit encryption refers to the size of the key used to encrypt the message. Roughly speaking, 128-bit encryption is STRONGER (309,485,009,821,345,068,724,781,056 times) than 40-bit encryption. 40-bit encryption is not considered "strong" security in the cryptographic community.

13. If TNS Smart Network Inc. requires me to have this level of encryption, then why don't you provide it??
To use WebMon you are required to have certain minimum hardware and software requirements. The 128-bit encryption is a part of these requirements – just like having a computer and an Internet connection. Many of you already have 128-bit encryption which came as a part of the software bundle with your computer or it was provided by your ISP. Others have gotten it as a part of another software.

14. What information should I provide to the WebMon Help Desk Representative to better allow them to help me download 128-bit encryption or a new browser?
Inform them of the browser you are currently using. Both Microsoft and Netscape have limited the number of browsers that you can download and/or update. If you are using an old browser you must upgrade the browser to a more recent version. This then may result in two downloads, one for the web browser and a second for the 128-bit encryption.
