How does encryption work?

Encryption is the process of converting information into a more secure format for transmission. This means that plain text is converted (encrypted) to scrambled code while being transmitted, and then translated (decrypted) back to plain text at the receiving end of the transmission. The process of converting the information to a code is one step we take to help safeguard your privacy. For more information please see "What is TNS Smart Network doing to protect my privacy on the Web?"and What can I do to protect my privacy over the Internet?"

Currently, there are 3 levels of encryption generally available in web browsers: 40-bit, 56-bit, and 128-bit encryption. The 128-bit browser offers the highest level of encryption generally available today and provides the best protection when transmitting confidential data over the Internet.

How do I find out if my browser has 128-Bit encryption?

If you tried to login to WebMon and got to this page, you do NOT have a 128-bit secure browser.

If you have Netscape…

Netscape Navigator for Windows lists its security level in its Help menu, under "About Netscape". In the Mac version, it is listed under the Apple icon. In the section marked "RSA Encryption", a sentence in bold describes either "US" or "International" security. The US refers to 128-bit and International to 40-bit or 56-bit encryption.

If you have I.E…

I.E. lists the security in its Help menu, under "About Internet Explorer". Next to the section marked "Cipher Strength" it will say 128-bit if you have the 128-bit secure browser.

What is TNS Smart Network Inc. doing to protect my privacy on the Web?

TNS Smart Network Inc. has also implemented firewalls and other internal encryption techniques. A firewall is essentially an electronic boundary that prevents unauthorized access to certain files.

We also regularly monitor internal systems and are always keeping up with the latest security and encryption technology. In addition, you will be automatically logged out of WebMon if there has not been any activity for 120 minutes.
